In 1887, Bly talked her way into the offices of Joseph Pulitzer’s newspaper, the New York World, and accepted an undercover assignment for which she would feign insanity in order to investigate reports of brutality and neglect at the Women’s Lunatic Asylum on Blackwell’s Island. Bly began her “lunatic” roleplaying at a working-class boarding house, where only one woman attempted to help her. After the first night of Bly’s act, the police were summoned to take her to the courthouse; the judge had her examined by several doctors, all of whom declared her to be insane. Bly was committed to the women’s asylum for ten days. Her reports of the abusive treatment she and other inmates received (later published in book form) brought her lasting fame and spurred major changes in how the city of New York diagnosed and treated insanity.
